Why Placemaking Matters

Goodwill's local region is attracting development and opportunity like never before.

Queensland will host the eyes of the world. Infrastructure is being committed at a generational scale, from Cross River Rail to Olympic venues to the precincts and corridors taking shape in between.

Infrastructure alone doesn’t make a place. A stadium is a venue. A laneway is a route. A shopping centre is a transaction. Placemaking is the layer that turns each into a connected experience. It’s the layer between built form and lived experience.

For public or private asset owners, that layer is commercial. Activated places drive a measurable lift in foot traffic, dwell time, retail yield, leasing demand, and asset value. They make precincts harder to leave and easier to recommend. For governments and councils, that layer is civic. Activated places build community connection, create safer streets, support thriving local economies, and earn public trust in the long planning horizons that shape a city’s future.

Excellence in placemaking turns a moment of growth into a generation of return.

Placemaking By Goodwill Projects

You've got the space.
We make it unmissable.

Every week, Goodwill Projects turns Australia’s most iconic sites into destinations people flock to.

In Good Company

The councils, developers, and operators we work with.

Selected partners, clients, and stakeholders across two decades of placemaking across Australia.

Where Our Work Begins

Engagement begins...

Engagement begins with one of three briefs. Find yours below.

A site between uses.

A green-site or holding parcel awaiting future development. Often years away from breaking ground, with capital tied up and the site invisible to the city in the meantime. We turn the interim into an asset, commercially and culturally.

An asset with untapped yield.

An existing space underperforming against its potential. Foot traffic plateaued, dwell time slipping, tenants seeking more from the centre. We add the activation layer that lifts yield, retention, and reputation across the assets you already own.

An iconic destination, created.

A destination built from the ground up. For a few hours a day, a weekend, one annual celebration, or a regular weekly market. We design, launch, and operate the destination that puts a site on the map.

How We Think

Three things make a place work.

Strategy. Operations. Third place. Most placemaking work gets one or two. We do all three, in one team, on every project.

Strategy

The thinking before the doing and the answers everything else depends on.

Every place we build starts with a clear answer to three questions: what is this place for, who is it for, and what's the commercial model that lets it last. Without those answers, activation is decoration.

Operations

The hard work nobody sees, stress-tested with two decades of experience.

Strategy without operations is a slide deck. We shape the agreements, vendor relationships, day-to-day management, and ongoing optimisation that turn a concept into a place that's still thriving in year five.

Third Place

The domain beyond work & home and the reason people come back.

A place nobody talks about isn't a place yet. We build the brand, the audience, the reputation and the cultural gravity that turn a site into the third place between home and work, somewhere people choose, return to, and recommend.

Good Places Aren't Accidents

End to end. No handovers.

Most placemaking work gets split across strategy consultants, design studios, programming agencies, and operations teams. We do all of it under one roof.

01

Strategy & positioning

Define what the place is for, who it's for, and why it will work.

02

Concept &
Design

Translate strategy into spatial, visual, and experiential design.

03

Vendor curation & commercials

Build the tenant mix, deal terms, and revenue model.

04

Events, residencies, and content that give people a reason to return.

05

Operations & management

Day to day running, maintenance, vendor relations, and growth.

06

The Case For Placemaking

Places change more than balance sheets.

Good placemaking is a commercial decision with civic dividends. Activated public space is consistently linked to lower crime, stronger community connection, higher local economic activity, and improved trust in civic institutions. The return shows up in foot traffic. It also shows up in consumer spending and social outcomes.

↓40%

Crime & antisocial behaviour

Activated public spaces show measurable reductions in crime rates and antisocial behaviour compared with vacant or underused sites.

↑3x

Social connection

Residents near active public places report significantly higher rates of community connection and social trust.

$20.4M+

Local economic uplift

Active precincts drive measurable lifts in surrounding retail, hospitality, and commercial rents.

↑X%

Civic trust & pride

Place activation correlates with improved community sentiment toward councils, agencies, and the broader civic project.
